THE regional party, led by the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, has endorsed another lawmaker from Davao City to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a statement, the Hugpong ng Pagbabago, chaired by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, said it was fielding Davao City 3rd District Rep. Isidro Ungab in the tight race.
The announcement came after Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte joined the race for speakership, amid the President’s warning that he would resign should his son pursue the top House leadership post.
“We understand if President Duterte, because of delicadeza, will not accept the intent of our brother from Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, Congressman Paolo Duterte, to resolve the conflict among candidates. Therefore, we are endorsing the bid of Congressman Isidro Ungab for Speaker,” the party said.
“Ungab is a four-term congressman and the only lawmaker to hold the chairmanships of both Ways and Means and Appropriations Committees,” it added.
The party also suggested that those vying for the speakership Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano be named Majority Leader instead, Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco, chairman of Appropriations Committee; and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez be given the chairmanship of the Accounts Committee.
“We earnestly hope that everyone can see the light in this option and move forward with urgency in serving our country,” the party said. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
