Members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines will hold their three-day plenary assembly starting Saturday at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Paco, Manila.
First on the agenda of the bi-annual gathering is the election of the new CBCP president.
“The election of new officers is first on the agenda this Saturday,” Fr. Marvin Mejia, CBCP secretary general, said. “The current CBCP officers will serve until Nov. 30 only,” he added.
Mejia is not discounting the possibility that Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles and Caloocan Bishop Pablo David will be re-elected as president and vice president, respectively. “There is a possibility based on the rules on term…they are still eligible,” he said.
An article posted on the CBCP website said the CBCP president and vice president are elected for two-year terms and can serve for a minimum of two terms. By tradition, they are reelected for their second and last term.
Members of the permanent council enjoy two terms in office with the vice president normally succeeding the president when his term expires.
Other members of the CBCP Permanent Council set to be elected by the bishops are their new secretary general, assistant secretary general, and treasurer. (Leslie Ann Aquino)
