THE Department of Energy (DoE) is set to bid 2,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy (RE) to entice its developers in the country.
Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi on Monday said the agency will auction off 2,000 MW for renewables as part of efforts in capacity building.
The allocation, taken from DoE’s additional capacity target of 10,000 MW by 2040, may be adjusted depending on the country’s power requirements. This concept applies to any electricity produced from RE sources including wind, solar, ocean, run-of-river hydropower, and biomass.
The bidding will be conducted based on the type of power, not RE source, may it be peaking or mid-merit. Peaking power operates in the event of high electricity demand while mid-merit or load following power plants can adjust its output to adapt to fluctuations in electricity demand.
The Energy chief said he has discussed the idea with the National Renewable Energy Board (NREB), the bureau guiding the department on the implementation of RE initiatives in the country.
“I relayed the idea to the NREB for them to study so that they can come back to me and discuss among other players,” said.
Cusi is confident that the country can encourage more entities to go into renewables through this scheme. “We are of course very confident because this is to encourage developers.”
He said the moment they assumed the post at the agency, they have already predicted power requirements to increase. “All this Build, Build, Build program [of the Duterte administration] is putting a pressure with the demand hitting a new peak of 11,500 MW for Luzon,” he added.
