THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has raised a heavy rainfall alert in parts of Luzon as tropical depression ‘Egay’ continues to enhance the southwest monsoon.
A yellow warning was raised over Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela in Metro Manila; San Narciso, San Marcelino, San Antonio, Castillejos, Subic, and Olongapo in Zambales; Bataan; and Bulacan due to an expected heavy rainfall of 7.5 to 15 millimeters per hour for at least three hours. Pagasa warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas and near river channels.
Pagasa said that light to moderate rains were affecting Pampanga; Bamban, Capas, and Concepcion in Tarlac; General Tinio, Gapan, San Isidro, Cabiao, San Antonio in Nueva Ecija; San Pedro and Binan in Laguna; General Nakar in Quezon; Nasugbu, Talisay, Laurel in Batangas; Cavite; Rizal and the rest of Metro Manila and Zambales.
Tropical depression ‘Egay’ is expected to weaken into a low pressure area (LPA) on Monday but monsoon rains will continue to prevail over parts of Luzon and the Visayas, the state-weather bureau said, prompting the suspension of classes in some areas of Metro Manila and Central Luzon.
“Inaasahan na si Egay ay tutungo dito sa may dulong hilagang Luzon pero within 12 to 24 hours po actually, posibleng tuluyan na itong humina at maging low pressure area bago tumama dito sa may dulong hilagang Luzon (We are expecting Egay to reach the tip of Northern Luzon but within 12 to 24 hours, it is possible to weaken into an LPA before it reaches the area),” said Pagasa’s Chris Perez.
Pagasa said Egay has slightly weakened as it moved toward the Batanes and Babuyan Islands. It was last spotted 195 kilometers east-northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, in an “almost stationary” state, carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hours (kph) near the center and gustiness of 60 kph.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said that an LPA spotted 790 kilometers west of Ilocos Sur was likely to become a tropical cyclone within 24 hours but was unlikely to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), moving toward the direction of Southern China or Northern Vietnam.
Signal No. 1 was raised over Batanes and Babuyan Islands, which will bring rains and winds of 30 kph to 60 kph in the area. Pagasa warned fisherfolk and small seacraft against venturing out over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the western seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon in the next 24 hours due to moderate to rough seas.
Pagasa said the southwest monsoon was expected to bring light to moderate and at times heavy monsoon rains over Luzon, including Metro Manila, and Western Visayas. Cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms were expected to prevail over Caraga, Davao Region, and the rest of Visayas. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
