Jimuel Pacquiao experienced what a tough boxing was all about despite winning by unanimous decision against Kim Daryll Marquez and keeping his undefeated record Saturday night at the Elorde gym in Romacom Center in Muntinlupa City.
Pacquiao, 18, who hiked his win-loss record to 4-0 with a knockout, had a hard time exchanging punches with the 19-year-old Marquez but was able to pull off a 30-26, 29-27 and 30-24 scores from the judges to seal the win.
In all those three rounds, Marquez fought gallantly and hit the son of the eight-division world champion with some crisp punches but couldn’t lay him down. Pacquiao was more on the defensive stance in the last round countering what Marquez was throwing.
“I trained and prepared hard for this fight so I can take a shot. This fight was good. It will make me work hard in the gym especially if you’re opponent is strong like that because you have to match it. There are so many talented and hardworking in boxing,” said Pacquiao after the three-round amateur bout.
He also added that he is in better shape compared to his previous three fights.
“I’m in better shape this time. This is also my first time boxing in for three minutes per round,” he said.
Marquez claimed he won the fight convincingly but accepted and respected the judges decision.
“For me, I won the fight because I landed a lot of punches than him but that’s okay with me, there were judges. I’m stronger and faster than him. I don’t feel dizzy after the fight, I’m just fine. It’s okay that I lost the fight, but I believe someday we’re going to face each other again,” Marquez said.
Marquez of Davao City absorbed his second defeat in four fights. He has a 1-2-1 win-loss-draw record with one knockout.
Jimuel’s father — World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight regular champion Manny Pacquiao — is presently in Los Angeles, California preparing for his July 20 fight in Las Vegas against undefeated American Keith Thurman, the WBA welterweight super champion.
