MIAMI: A California woman was killed after being attacked by sharks while snorkeling in the Bahamas with her family, media reports said on Wednesday.

Jordan Lindsey, 21, was attacked by three sharks while snorkeling off Rose Island, east of the capital Nassau, Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Rolle told CNN affiliate WPLG.

KABC-TV says Lindsey’s parents and other family members saw the sharks and yelled a warning but she didn’t hear them in time. Officials say her arms, legs and buttocks were bitten and her right arm was severed.

She was brought to shore and taken to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, Rolle said.

It was unclear what species of sharks were involved in the attack.

“We can confirm a US citizen in the Bahamas succumbed to her injuries following a shark attack on June 26,” a State Department spokesperson told ABC News.

“Jordan had the most beautiful, gentle soul and she will be missed deeply,” her family said on a GoFundMe page set up to raise money to bring her body back to California and pay for funeral expenses.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism expressed its “condolences and deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim,” it said in a statement carried by WPLG. AFP/ AP
