Twins defy poverty to graduate cum laude in Tarlac

TARLAC CITY— Another set of fraternal twins finished their college degree with flying colors from Tarlac State University (TSU) during the fourth day of the school’s 30th Commencement Exercises on Wednesday.
Raniell and Darshiell Lopez, 20, graduated cum laude after completing Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education major in Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health.
The twins said they drew inspiration from their father, Darius Lopez, 42, a visual artist who juggled various jobs to send them to college.
Raniell, who is also a visual artist, recalled how he would sell his artworks to fellow students or help his father in making mural paintings to earn money.
Darshiell, meanwhile, was a member of the TSU Rondalia ensemble and offered music tutorials to support her studies.
“We’re only given fare allowance. The money was just enough to reach our school and return home,” Raniell told the Inquirer.
He said they had to cook food at home and bring this to school as packed lunch to save money.
“We’re not ashamed to tell others that we came from an impoverished family,” Raniell said.
The twins were consistent honor students since elementary and usually performed in various school activities.
They are now preparing for the Licensure Examinations for Teachers in September./ac
