LUCENA CITY –– Senator-elect Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Wednesday declared that he would push for the extension of the terms of office of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK).

In an interview with journalists here, Go said he would file a bill that would reset the scheduled barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections from 2020 to 2022.

The proposal, if passed into law, would consequently extend the term of office of current barangay and SK officials to four years.

“Hindi naman nila kasalanan na kinain ang termino nila noong previous terms dahil sa kapo-postpone. Dapat ay three years, naging two years.

(It’s not their fault that their terms were eaten up because of postponements. Three years became two.)

So, I’m proposing to extend it,” Go explained.

Republic Act 10952, which was approved on October 2, 2017, postponed the Oct. 23, 2017 barangay and SK elections to the second Monday of May 2018.

The law also stated that the twin polls be held on the second May of 2020, giving the candidates who won in the May 14, 2018, only a two-year term, instead of the three years as mandated by the previous law.
