BACOLOD CITY – A former member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Command in Negros Occidental was shot to death by two motorcycle-riding men at Barangay 4, Silay City, Wednesday.

Maj. Rollie Pondevilla said the victim, Captain Jose Lindy Chan, of Barangay 5, was talking to his friend on a roadside around 9 a.m. when the assailants arrived, then one of them suddenly fired at him several times and fled.

Chan succumbed to four gunshot wounds. His friend was unharmed.

Recovered from the crime scene were nine fired cartridge cases of .45-caliber pistol, four deformed slugs and a fired slug cover, police reported.

Police also recovered a helmet, jacket, and a bonnet in an adjacent subdivision, believed to be owned by the assailants.
Pondevilla said the incident might be business-related since the victim had been receiving threats.

Investigation is still ongoing to identify the perpetrators and establish the motive behind the killing.

He said Chan, who was also a businessman, was previously ambushed on board his pick-up truck in  Barangay E. Lopez but he survived.

Chan also made headlines in 2008 after filing graft charges against a former mayor in Silay City and 26 other city hall employees for the P18 million computerization project of the city government.

He was previously assigned to the PNP Maritime Command based in Cadiz City. (Glazyl Masculino)
