ALASKA relied on its strong collective effort to down Magnolia, 103-80, on Wednesday night for its third victory in Season 44 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

After establishing a 50-38 lead at the half, the Aces banked on import Chris Daniels, who poured in 18 of his 23 points in the third frame, and didn’t look back to improve to 3-2.

It was Magnolia’s first game after settling for a first runner-up finish in the last Philippine Cup against defending champion San Miguel Beer.

“I think they did such a tremendous job in the finals and we caught them kind of tired and lacking in preparation. You don’t see the best team’s best when they are coming off a Finals,” said Alaska coach Alex Compton.

Jayvee Casio tallied 17 points, while Jeron Teng made a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Aces. Simon Enciso had 11 points, Carl Bryan Cruz got nine points and Chris Banchero issued 11 assists plus eight points also for the Aces.

Riding on an explosive start, the Aces sustained their run in the second half behind Daniels and registered a commanding 94-66 cushion in the early part of the payoff period.

Vic Manuel also returned to play his first game this season after suffering a back injury in the Governors’ Cup Finals last December.

Manuel contributed six points in his return.

Ian Sangalang scored 17 points and added nine rebounds for the Hotshots.

Import John Fields had a lackluster performance with 12 points and six rebounds for Magnolia.
