MACAU: Reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas joined the list of world boxing champions to win the prestigious Jersey Joe Walcott Award.
Ancajas was feted on Thursday night at the 36th IBF annual convention at the Wynn Palace grandball room in Cotai.
“We are extremely proud of Jerwin (Ancajas), Jerwin is a throwback to older times. He fights often, and I mean he defended his title seven times. You don’t see fighters these days with that intensity in the fight as much as Jerwin does,” American IBF President Daryl Peoples told The Manila Times after the awarding ceremony.
“I believe he is the first Filipino to win the Jersey Joe Walcott award so that makes it extra special and again we couldn’t be more proud of Jerwin. Coming from the Philippines where there are so many great champions, I’m sure that it is part of his motivation. I think in the next few years, people are going to speak for him as references as world champion. Jerwin is hot right now.”
The 27-year-old Panabo, Davao del Norte pride joined the elite list that included former world champions like IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby (2018), former IBF middleweight champion Gennedy Golovkin (2017), Amnat Ruenroeng (2016), Evgeny Gradovich (2015), Bernard Hopkins (2014) and Wladimir Klitschko (2013).
