The scheduled reshipment of the tons of Canadian wastes back to its port of origin may have to wait for another day following the apparent delay in the arrival of the ship that would ferry the 69 containers, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said yesterday.
“After containers cleaned & ready to go ship arrival was delayed a day; Ricky (Enrique) Razon made sure once docked ship loaded,” Locsin said in a tweet. Razon is the chairman and chief executive officer of the International Container Terminal Services Inc., a Philippine-based port handling giant.
To further speed up the process of sending back the contentious Canadian trash, Locsin said Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu was “up early begged for foreign transshipment permits.”
He said even Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines John Holmes “never slept til its all done.”
Locsin had earlier announced in his social media account that the container vans filled with garbage will depart Subic on May 30 via China after completing fumigation and documentation processes.
Earlier reports said the almost 2,000 tons of Canadian wastes will be loaded to ships owned by three shipping companies. The shipping cost of about P10 million will be shouldered by the Canadian government.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has reportedly imposed a “media ban” inside an area at the Subic Bay Freeport where the Canadian-bound garbage is being held pending its shipment out of the country.
Only DFA and SBMA media production teams will be reportedly allowed to document the whole process from start to finish, meaning from fumigation until the ship leaves Subic port. (Roy Mabasa)
