4 policemen found guilty of kidnapping, killing of Taiwanese

A Quezon City court on Wednesday sentenced four police officers, among others, of reclusion perpetua without parole for the kidnap and murder of a Taiwanese in 2005.

Regional Trial Court Branch 219 Judge Janette Abergos-Samar handed the verdict on Wednesday morning againt Staff Sergeant Allan Berania, Patrolman Candido Vallejo, Patrolman Joel Tapec, and Patrolman Alexander Pangilinan, and a certain civilian identified as Ferdinand Gahusan.

Three others are still at large — Patrolman Daniel Maburan, Patrolman Ely Frias, and a certain alias Ogie.

The judge also ordered the convicts to pay the family of the victim P100,000 as civil indemnity, P100,000 as moral damages, P100,000 as exemplary damages, and P100,000 as temperate damages.

The victim, Michael Chan, was killed along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City despite receiving a P6-million ransom from his family in exchange for his release.

Chan’s body was found dumped in Antipolo City in Rizal.

The kidnappers, also known as ‘Doce Pares’, alleged that Chan was into drug trafficking. JAIME PILAPIL
