PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed a former dean of the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Statistics as the new national statistician.

Dr. Claire Dennis Mapa replaces Lisa Grace Bersales whose term ended on April 22.

Mapa will have a term of five years.

Prior to his appointment, Mapa was a statistics professor at UP and dean for four years.

He was a vice president and executive director of the UP Statistical Center Research Foundation Inc.

He is included in the 193 new government officials sworn in by Duterte on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Duterte also reappointed Ramon Tulfo Jr. as his special envoy for public diplomacy to the People’s Republic of China for another six months.

The reappointment came two months after Tulfo said that there was an influx of Chinese workers in the country because Filipinos were lazy and were always taking breaks.

While he drew flak from labor groups, Tulfo stood by his statement.

Duterte also appointed Allen Capuyan as the new commissioner at the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, replacing Leonor Quintayo.

He will be representing the Southern and Eastern Mindanao until February 20, 2022.

Duterte signed the appointment papers on May 27, 2019, copies of which were given to members of the media on Tuesday. RALPH VILLANUEVA
