MANILA, Philippines — It would be better if Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto would continue his term as the Senate president for the 18th Congress given his leadership style.

Co-senator Sherwin Gatchalian said this on Sunday as he said that more reforms will be passed if the leadership of Sotto would continue.

“Mas maganda ho na tuloy-tuloy yung pagsusuporta kay Senator Sotto para itong nalalabing tatlong taon ng administrasyon, mas maraming tayo na matapos na panukalang batas,” Gatchalian said in an interview with dzBB.

“I think it would be the best interest of the majority and also the administration na si Senator Sotto dahil alam niya na ho yung kanyang gagawin at marami hong matapos na mga reporma kung siya po yung tuloy tuloy na Senate president.”

According to Gatchalian, Sotto is a “consensus builder” that hears the ideas and stand of every senator during sessions.

With regards to the upcoming new set of senators composed of administration-backed candidates, Gatchalian also urged them to support Sotto’s leadership.

“Whether Hugpong ka, or PDP ka, ako NPC, parte po tayo ng majority, at sa ngayon ang incumbent na majority ay suportado sa liderato ng ating incumbent Senate president Vicente Sotto,” he said.

It also does not matter whether or not a senator would hold chairmanship in committees as long as they participate during plenaries, Gatchalian said.

“Ang importante, senador ka. Ang importante, pagpasok nung batas at issue sa plenaryo ay aktibo kang nakaikipag diskuryso. Para sa akin, secondary na lang ‘yung chairmanship,” he added. (Editor: Julie Espinosa)
