CARDINAL Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle was reelected president of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of Catholic charities around the world.

The new four-year mandate was given to Tagle during the confederation’s 21st General Assembly in Rome on May 24 that brought together some 450 representatives of the confederation formed by 165 organizations.

Tagle was first elected to head Caritas in 2015. He was the first Caritas Internationalis president who came from Asia.

During his first election, Tagle was supported by all countries in Asia, getting 91 out of the 133 votes by Caritas member countries.

This year’s assembly has the theme: “A single human family, a common home.”

The assembly was opened on May 23 with a Mass presided by Pope Francis at the St. Peter’s Basilica and was concelebrated by Cardinal Tagle and other bishops.

Archbishop Rolando Tria Tirona, Caritas Philippines national director, and Fr. Edwin Gariguez, executive secretary, were also present.

As head of Caritas Internationalis, Tagle is expected to strengthen the confederation’s works in the light of serving the most vulnerable and in living out charity and justice throughout the world. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
