Education Secretary Leonor Briones is not interested in running for senator in the next elections in 2022.

Briones, a former national treasurer, ruled out any political ambition after she was introduced as senator during a press conference in Malacañang yesterday.

“Maraming salamat Tony sa pag-promote mo sa akin. Wala akong ambition na magiging senador,” Briones said.

Finance Assistant Secretary Tony Lambino had bungled the introduction of Briones in the press conference when he addressed her as senator. Lambino immediately made a correction and addressed Briones as the Secretary.

“Kasama natin muli si Senat…si Secretary,” he said, laughing at his gaffe.

But Lambino did not regret his mistake and even expressed hope Briones will become a senator.  “Sana magdilang anghel ako,” he said, before introducing the Education chief again to the public.

“Kasama nating muli ang ang napakagaling sa operations ng Education department pero napakagaling sa inspiration para sa buong Pilipinas, si Secretary Leonor Briones,” he said.

Briones is widely regarded as a distinguished and beloved academic, teacher, and public official.

Among her previous government posts were National Treasurer, Presidential Adviser for Social Development, and Secretary to the Commission on Audit.

She graduated magna cum laude from Siliman University with a degree on business administration.

Briones  also has a master’s in public administration from the University of the Philippines. Briones is also professor emeritus of the National College of Public Administration and Governance, University of the Philippines. (Genalyn Kabiling)
