NEWLY elected Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto called on the city to set aside politics and unite.
In a Facebook post on Sunday night, Sotto said in Filipino that “the voice of the people was clearly for change” as he called for “unity for the greater good of the city.”
He had called on his supporters to ensure a smooth transition and to support the city’s programs.
“’Wag nating kalimutan na sa July 1 pa magsisimula ang bagong term; kaya patuloy nating igalang ang awtoridad ng kasalukuyang mayor,” (Let us not forget that the new term starts on July 1, so let us continue to respect the authority of the current mayor.) he wrote.
At the same time, Sotto also took a dig at some of his detractors.
“Tanungin natin ang mga sarili natin, ‘Ano ba ang ipinaglalaban ko – ang ikabubuti ng Lungsod o pansariling interes? Kanino ba dapat ako mas loyal – sa isang politiko o sa aking bayan?’” (Let’s ask ourselves, “What am I fighting for – the betterment of our city or our own vested interests? Who am I loyal to – a politican or my country?) Sotto further wrote.
The young mayor-elect also told local government units that he would keep them far away from politics.
“Alam ko namang karamihan sa inyo ay gusto lamang magtrabaho, kaso minsa’y nadadamay sa pulitika,” (I know that a lot of you just want to work, but sometimes, politics gets in the way.) he wrote. “Gaya ng sinasabi ko nung kampanya pa lang, basta’t nagtatrabaho kayo ng maayos, hindi niyo kailangang mag-alala.” (Like what I said during the campaign, as long as you work well, you don’t have to worry.)
The son of actors Vic Sotto and Coney Reyes, Sotto defeated incumbent mayor Bobby Eusebio during the elections last week, ending the Eusebios’ 27-year reign in Pasig City.
