THIRTY-four people were hurt in a collision of two coaches of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), authorities said on Sunday.

In a joint statement, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) said 30 passengers and four LRT-2 personnel were injured in the accident, which happened between Cubao and Anonas stations in Quezon City on Saturday night.

They said five of the victims were confined at the World Citi Medical Center and Quirino Memorial Medical Center.

The agencies apologized for what they called an “isolated incident.”

LRTA Administrator Reynaldo Berroya ordered the creation of a fact-finding committee to determine the cause of the incident.

Despite the accident, both the DOTr and LRTA also stressed that the rail transport system remained a “safe mode of public transportation”.

“The DOTr and LRTA assure the public that we are taking this incident very seriously, and are exerting all efforts to prevent this kind of incident from happening again,” the statement said.

Operations of the LRT-2 are now back to normal.  LISBET K. ESMAEL
