THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) collected over 200 tons or 29 truckloads of campaign materials around the metropolis after the midterm elections.
In a post clean-up report on Friday, the agency’s Metro Parkway Clearing Group (MPCG) said clearing operation teams scraped and sprayed and used man lifters on the 200.37-ton or 705.34 cubic meters of trash composed of tarpaulins, buntings and posters hanging on electrical posts, wirings and trees; leaflets, sample ballots, flyers that were pasted on concrete walls and fences in the vicinity of public schools and major thoroughfares.
“We target to rid the major roads in the metro of campaign materials and spruce up public schools until this week so the public can prepare for the opening of classes next month early,” said MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim.
The collected campaign trash is broken down into 23.42 tons on May 14; 14.45 tons on May 15; and 17.08 tons on May 16.
A lot of trash were collected in Manila, Quezon City, Parañaque and Makati.
In a report released in June 2017, the MMDA reported that with the fast rate in which Metro Manila generated trash, the three landfills it was using could no longer accommodate garbage by 2037.
It said that the Quezon City Sanitary Landfill would be full by 2021, Navotas Sanitary Landfill by 2026 and Rizal Provincial Sanitary Landfill by 2037.
Solid waste generation of Metro Manila residents, as of October last year, is about 56,000 cubic meters or 9,871 tons daily. NEIL JAYSON SERVALLOS
