MANILA, Philippines — Eight passengers of a van-for-hire heading to Tacloban City were confirmed dead after the utility van collided head-on with a six-wheeler truck in Sitio Tab-ang, Barangay District 3, municipality of Babatngon, Leyte on Friday morning, police said.
Police Lieutenant Melvin Ayay, acting chief of the Babatngon Police Station, said they have yet to identify the fatalities and the survivors of the crash that happened at around 6:14 a.m.
In a phone interview, Ayay said the passenger van bearing Plate No. 084403 left the terminal in Babatngon passed 5 a.m. and was on its way to Tacloban City when the accident happened.
He said that the six-wheeler truck, bearing Plate No. LEF 768, was heading to Babatngon town to deliver swine to a dealer at the Babatngon Public Market.
“The area where the collision happened is prone to accident because the drivers from opposite directions coud not see each other while traversing the highway,” Ayay said.
“I hope some of those brought to the hospital will survive because some of them were in critical condition,” he added.
Police Lt. Col. Ma. Delia Rentuya, spokesperson of Eastern Visayas police, confirmed the number of fatalities to INQUIRER.net.
Police said they have immediately secured the area after the incident. (Editor: Jonathan P. Vicente)
