Gospel: Jn 14:1-6
JESUS said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

In the movie Mahogany, Diana Ross sings, “Do you know where you’re going to? Do you like the things that life is showing you?”
Jesus knows exactly where he is going: to the Father from whom he came prior to his incarnation. His way, however, involves an “exodus” – he must suffer many things before he enters into his glory. He comforts his disciples about his impending departure. Though they will be sad and even start to lose their faith when they see him suffer, this sorrow will turn to joy because Jesus will rise from the dead and show himself to them.
The disciples are meant to go to the Father’s house where dwelling places are prepared for them. But for them also, this involves an “exodus” which as this moment they are not ready to undertake. They will be able later, because the risen Jesus will strengthen them with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Do we know where we are going in life? Do we have a goal that guides our journey?
