THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) downgraded its red alert status to blue on Wednesday noon since nearly all local candidates nationwide have been proclaimed, its spokesman said.

Brig. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said in a statement the alert may be lowered further to white or normal “when the candidates in national positions will have been proclaimed.”

Arevalo said that a blue alert meant restricting 50 percent of military personnel to their respective camps and must be prepared for any contingency.

Armed Forces Chief Benjamin Madrigal Jr. declared a red alert ahead of the elections.

He called for unity, saying: “We may have differed in our choices…but are one in our desire for good governance.”

“We only have one country with one aspiration as a people which is national security and sustainable development that follows from strong basic institutions,” he said. DEMPSEY REYES
