Two outgoing senators who chose to run for a local position in the 2019 midterm elections ended up triumphant.
Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, who joined the gubernatorial race in Sorsogon, was proclaimed the winner after receiving the highest number of votes at 303,960, while his rival Bladi Frivaldo only got 31,867 votes. Three other contenders only got over 2,000 votes each.
In a Twitter post, Escudero thanked the people who voted for him and supported his team in the Nationalist People’s Coalition.
“Salamatunon tabi sa gabos na nagtubod, nagtiwala asin nag-suporta sakuya asin sa NPC/Team Sorsogon First! :):):),” Escudero wrote.
His wife, celebrity and fashion icon Heart Evangelista, also congratulated her husband personally on her Instagram account.
Escudero’s wife said she also can’t wait to see her husband carry out his plans for Sorsogon, from developing their tourism, sports programs, health programs, and agricultural industry.
Sen. Loren B. Legarda, meanwhile, ended the 32-year rule of the Javiers in her home province of Antique.
Loren was proclaimed the new congresswoman of the lone district of Antique, defeating former Gov. and Rep. Exequiel Javier.
She got a total of 199,187 votes in the province’s 18 towns, while her opponent got 69,716 votes. (Hannah L. Torregoza)
