THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) will investigate the problems that stalled the otherwise smooth conduct of the midterm elections even as it maintained that the just concluded polls were successful.
Comelec Chairman Sheriff Abbas said on Tuesday that the investigation would be conducted after everything has settled down even as he cited possible reasons why some of the vote counting machines (VCMs) and the secured digital (SD) cards bogged down at a time when they were needed most.
“We wanted a perfect election. But it happened, there were a lot of problems,” said Abbas in a press briefing, stressing that the VCMs and SD cards that malfunctioned were just a small percentage.
“We offer no excuses because it inconvenienced a lot of voters on election day,” said Abbas who apologized and asked for the public’s understanding and patience.
Also to be investigated, Abbas said, were the suppliers of the SD cards and the defective marking pens, adding that the Comelec law department is currently reviewing the contracts of the suppliers of the election paraphernalia. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
