Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Oscar Albayalde on Monday morning said he has no political ambitions as he congratulated his predecessor, retired Police General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa, on his successful senatorial bid, saying “he deserved it.”
Dela Rosa, who is part of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Sinagtala Class of 1986, is at 5th place behind reelectionists Cynthia Villar and Grace Poe, former Special Assistant to the President Christopher “Bong” Go, and former senator and Taguig representative Pia Cayetano.
Albayalde said, however that he has “no intention of running as a politician come 2022.”
“I have no political ambitions and with regards after my retirement, it is up to the President,” he said.
Aside from dela Rosa, former PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Benjamin Magalong won the mayoral elections in Baguio City, beating contender Ed Bilog, a PDP-Laban-backed mayoral candidate who has never lost an election since 1990.
He also beat Edgar Avila and Jose Molintas.
Magalong is the police general who led the investigation into the Mamasapano clash in 2015 in which 44 elite members of the police Special Action Force (SAF) were killed while attempting to serve arrest warrants to international terrorists.
He is also the lone political neophyte in the race.
