Isko Moreno is new Manila mayor, defeats ‘Goliaths’ in politics

FRANCISCO “Isko Moreno” Domagoso was proclaimed the new mayor of Manila before dawn on Tuesday.
Domagoso defeated the incumbent Joseph Estrada and former mayor Alfredo Lim.
Domagoso led his opponents from the start of the canvass by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) at the San Andres Sports Complex.
Domagoso got 340,018 votes. Estrada, who has conceded, got 199,773 while Lim was at third with 131,539 votes.
When asked for a reaction, the newly elected mayor said, “It is a humbling experience.”
He also thanked his supporters, including the Catholic Church and Iglesia ni Cristo which picked him over his two rivals.
Domagoso’s running mate, incumbent Vice Mayor Maria Sheilah Lacuna-Pangan, also secured a second term.
Estrada’s tandem, Amado Bagatsing lost to Lacuna-Pangan by 118,052 votes.
Lacuna-Pangan garnered 373,180 votes against Bagatsing’s 255,128.
95.54 percent of the election returns have been transmitted and canvassed, representing 1435 out of a total of 1502 clustered precincts in Manila.
The are a total of 1,065,149 registered voters in Manila, but only 698,522 have cast their votes.
