Mayoralty candidate’s supporter shot dead in Digos

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines — An active supporter of a mayoralty candidate in this city was shot to death at around 1:55 p.m., Sunday, police said.

Lt. Col. Deozar Almasa, chief of the Digos City Police Station, identified the supporter as Omar Payan Jamad, 28, a resident Barangay Cogon in this city.

A lone assailant shot Jamad as was having a drinking session with friends outside his neighbor’s house.

Jamad was a actively campaigning for Davao del Sur Provincial Board Member Nonito Llanos III, who is running for mayor of this city under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HnP).

But Almasa said police had no evidence to show that the killing was election-related.

Almasa said the had a gunshot wound on his right check, with the bullet exiting on the left portion of his neck.

Jamad’s neighbors said they were surprised by his killing since he had no derogatory record in their village.
