UPDATE: Ateneo back in Finals of women’s volleyball in UAAP 81

THE Ateneo de Manila University are in the Finals of the women’s volleyball event of Season 81 of the University Athletics Association of the the Philippines (UAAP) with a four-set victory over the Far Eastern University, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-14, at the FilOil Arena in San Juan on Wednesday.
The Lady Eagles will face the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) for the first time in a best-of-three championship series since joining the league in 1978.
UST, with a twice to beat advantage in the semi-finals, eliminated three-time defending champion De La Salle University (DLSU) on Sunday.
Game 1 of the Finals is on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Ateneo, which earned a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis after finishing the two-round elimination on top, got back at the same team that eliminated it from the Final Four last year and snapped its six straight Finals appearances.
The Lady Tams forced the deciding match after surviving a five-set thriller last Saturday.
Kat Tolentino finished with 19 points off 17 kills and two kill blocks, graduating middle Maddie Madayag and Ponggay Gaston added 12 markers each and Bea De Leon had nine for the Lady Eagles, who dominated at the net with 12 kill blocks.
FEU’s Jerrili Malabanan finished her collegiate career with 18 points with 16 coming off attacks while Heather Guino-o closed her swan song with 12 markers – all of kills – and added 14 digs for Lady Tams. Jeanette Villareal scored 11 for FEU, which committed 36 errors.
