THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Monday assured the public that there were enough soldiers to secure the midterm elections on May 13.
About 30,000 to 40,000 soldiers will be sent off on Tuesday from Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City in ceremonies to be led by Armed Forces Chief Benjamin Madrigal Jr., Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Oscar Albayalde and Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Sheriff Abas.
The ceremony will also include a send-off of PNP personnel, as well as the turnover of the full contingent and vast resources of the Departments of Education, Health and Energy, Philippine National Red Cross, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel).
Col. Noel Detoyato, military public affairs chief, meanwhile said that there were enough security personnel to thwart any threat to the midterm polls.
“There are enough safeguards issued by Comelec and specific instructions issued by the service commanders and the [military chief] Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr.,” Detoyato said.
“With the AFP and PNP’s full support to Comelec, we are confident that…we are more than prepared for the conduct of the midterm elections. While these preparations are being undertaken, our primary task of counter-insurgency operations are also ongoing,” he added.
The troops tapped by the military leadership will be deployed nationwide in support of the contingent coming from the PNP to secure precincts that were considered “hotspots.”
The AFP and the PNP has been deputized by the Comelec to jointly secure the elections. DEMPSEY REYES
