JERWIN Ancajas proved to be too much for his Japanese opponent whom he defeated via technical knockout (TKO) as he defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight title on Sunday at the Stockton Arena in Stockton California.
Ancajas, 27 bombarded Ryuichi Funai with various combinations to the body and head over six rounds en route to the TKO in the seventh.
The 33-year-old Funai refused to go down in the fight until the sixth round but the beating he got from Ancajas prompted the ring physician to discontinue the fight to seal Ancajas’ victory.
“I thought that was vintage Jerwin Ancajas,” International matchmaker Sean Gibbons told The Manila Times through an online message and thanked Ancajas’ Filipino nutritionist Jeaneth Aro for a job well done.
“With his new diet lady, he was physically strong and had the energy to put his combinations together. He is back in top form and ready to fight the best,” said Gibbons.
Ancajas improved his win-loss-draw record to 31-1-2 with 21 knockouts.
It was redemption for the Panabo, Davao del Norte pride after his fight with Mexican Alejandro Santiago Barrios at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California ended in a draw last September 28.
