THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) deferred the eight-month rehabilitation of the Marcos Bridge in Marikina City that was to have started on Saturday because its re-routing scheme would not ease the expected traffic congestion.

MMDA Command Center chief Edison “Bong” Nebrija made the announcement to postpone the closure for “another week” after inspecting the affected areas.

Nebrija said that instead of eight months straight, the timeline was cut to four starting with the “long overdue” rehabilitation of the eastbound side of the Marcos Bridge along Marcos Highway in Marikina City and another four months for the westbound portion.

Nebrija said the alternate routes, which would direct motorists to take the westbound side of the bridge going to Antipolo City and vehicles going to Cubao to use the service road in front of SM Marikina, would be congesting the Libis Area in Quezon City.

At least 3,000 vehicles pass through Marcos Highway every hour.

Nebrija said the MMDA was studying the possibility of using the Blue Ridge Intersection in Katipunan Ave.

“When the school year begins, many people would be affected that’s why we need to do this,” he said.

Private contractors of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DWHH) have been requesting for the schedule of the repair since last year.

Another challenge, MMDA General Manager Jose Arturo Garcia Jr., said were trucks traversing the bridge. A proposal is to adjust the truck ban hours to 6 a.m.-10 am from the present 7 a.m.-10 a.m. NEIL JAYSON N. SERVALLOS
