Former SGV head David Balangue dies at 67

LOCAL auditing firm Sycip, Gorres, Velayo and Company’s (SGV) former chairman David Balangue has died. He was 67.

Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) Executive Director Arnold Salvador confirmed to The Manila Times on Monday that Balangue died earlier in the day after suffering from prostate cancer for five years.

“Yes, that is true. [It is a] sad day,” Salvador said.

Based on his LinkedIn account, Balangue served as chairman of SGV since 2004. He also assumed several positions in the company.

Balangue served as board of director of several companies, including listed firm Roxas Holdings Inc., as well as Trans-Asia Oil, and Energy Development Corp., Phinma Energy Corp., Philippine Bank of Communications, and Holcim Philippines Inc., among others.

He was also a member of various business organizations that included MAP, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants or PICPA, the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines or FINEX, and Capital Markets Development Council.

In 2012, Balangue was appointed by former president Benigno Aquino 3rd as a commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to replace Raul Palabrica who retired in March 2012. He should have been the first non-lawyer commissioner of the SEC.

Antonieta Ibe replaced Balangue at the SEC.

Balangue finished as magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the Manuel L. Quezon University, and with a post graduate Finance degree from the Northwestern University in Illinois, USA. ANGELICA BALLESTEROS
