THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) appealed to 60 Filipinos working in a hospital in Esbea, Libya to immediately take shelter at the Philippine embassy since the area was no longer safe after two artillery rounds struck the medical facility on Sunday.
Chargés d’Affaires and Philippine head of mission Elmer Cato on Facebook said the asmi istrators of the Ali Omar Ashkar Hospital in Esbea told the embassy that “they could no longer assure the safety and security of our kababayan (fellowmen) there.”
“In view of this, the embassy appeals to our kababayan working there and their dependents to evacuate to safer locations now. The embassy can accommodate those who wish to evacuate until it is safe for them to return there,” Cato said.
“The situation in the area has reached dangerous levels. The Embassy will make arrangements to extricate our kababayan as soon as this could be done,” he said.
Cato also posted his appeal on Twitter:
“(The) Philippine embassy in Libya appeals to more than 60 of our kababayan (fellowmen) working at the Ali Omar Ashkr Hospital in Esbea and their dependents to evacuate now. The area is no longer safe. Please don’t wait for more artillery rounds to fall. Please move to the embassy now.”
Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. also expressed concern for the safety of Filipinos in Esbea.
“Please go to the embassy, I beg you,” he said on Twitter.
