THE water level in Angat dam, the main source for Metro Manila, has breached its critical low on Sunday, although the drop was not expected to affect water supply, state agencies said.

As of 6 a.m. on Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) recorded Angat’s reservoir at 179.97 meters, slightly below the 180 critical low level mark set by the dam operators.

Pagasa’s latest forecast also indicate the water level may reach 173.5 meters in May, based on the expected amount of rainfall during the dry season, the effects of the prevailing “weak El Niño” and water use. The Angat dam in Bulacan supplies 90 percent of Metro Manila’s water supply.

The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) on Friday reduced irrigation allocations for May to 10 cubic meters per second (cms), lower than the 40 cms and 35 cms in March and April.

Water supply for Metro Manila will not be affected as water allocation for the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) will be maintained at 48 cms.

The NWRB, however, urged the public to conserve at least 4 liters of water or a total of 48 million liters daily to reduce demand on Angat Dam. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
