THE water level in Angat dam, the main source of water in Metro Manila, continues to decline and may reach critical low by Sunday, the state weather bureau said.
As of 6 a.m. on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) recorded Angat’s reservoir at 180.73 meters. Critical level is at 180 meters.
Pagasa hydrologist Ailene Abelardo said the expected low level was based on a 0.40-meter average decline.
Pagasa’s latest forecast also indicates that the water level may drop to 173.5 in May, based on the expected amount of rainfall during the dry season and the “weak El Nino” and water use.
“Yung dam office and nag-si-set ng low water levels na yun, kung saan kapag umabot dun and elevation ng isang dam, magkakaroon sila ng pagbabago sa activity na isinasagawa sa dam (Dam offices set low water levels that when reached, they may change dam activites),” Abelardo said.
Angat dam in Bulacan supplies 90 percent of the Metro’s water needs.
Meanwhile, other dams continue to experience declining water levels from the previous day due to lack of rainfall. These are Ambuklao dam at 740.16 meters (-0.08 meters), San Roque dam at 251.67 (-1.07 meters), Pantabangan dam at 195.27 meters (-0.18 meters), and Caliraya dam at 286.25 (-0.44 meters). Despite the drop, all dams are still within normal levels.
Meanwhile, other dams experiencing increasing levels are Binga dam at 566.50 meters (+0.41meters) and Magat dam 172.91 meters (+0.06 meters). DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
