A magnitude 4.4. Earthquake was recorded in Ilocos Norte on Friday, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake, tectonic in origin, was at 7 kilometers southwest of San Nicolas, and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Intensity 4 was felt in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte and Intensity 3 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.
Phivolcs Project Assistant Jun Tanganan said it was strong because of the shallow depth. It, however, was not connected to the 6.1 magnitude quake in Castillejos, Zambales on Monday.
“Araw-araw po may quake. Talagang yung trend po kasi medyo nagkataon lang na may malakas. Buong Pilipinas po kasi merong fault line kaya may earthquake talaga tayo (Earthquakes occur every day. That is a trend even though we felt strong earthquakes recently. There are fault lines across the Philippines so earthquakes usually occur),” Tanganan said.
He added that there was a usual average of 20 earthquakes per day with low magnitudes. He advised the public to remain vigilant and be prepared as strong quakes were not predictable.
