THE 6.5 magnitude quake that hit Eastern Samar on Tuesday recorded a lower number of aftershocks compared to Zambales, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
As of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Phivolcs registered 67 aftershocks, 21 plotted or confirmed by more instruments, and three felt by people. The strength of aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.8 to 4.6.
Research Assistant Bhenz Rodriguez said that with the Eastern Samar quake occuring deeper from the surface, with a depth of 63 kilometers, aftershocks were only expected to last for only a few days. The lower magnitude 6.1 Zambales quake was considered shallow with a depth of 11 kilometers and was expected to last for several weeks.
