6 soldiers killed, 6 wounded in Samar clash

SIX soldiers were killed and six were wounded following an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Samar, a military spokesman said on Tuesday.
The slain soldiers were identified as Cpl. Junurimbran Mamalo Jr.; Cpl. Edgar Abing; Private First Class Arthur Garcia; Private First Class Rufino Paster Jr.; Private Danilo Constantino Jr.; and Private Elben Lagrimas.
Capt. Reynaldo Aragones, spokesman of the 8th Infantry Division, said troops were on combat patrol in Barangay Buluan in Calbiga when they received reports about the presence of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the village of Beri.
Aragones said the NPA rebels were reportedly extorting money from residents in the area.
Aragones said soldiers from the 46th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army clashed with about 20 members of the NPA at about 2 a.m. on Tuesday.I
n a separate report by an Army source, it noted that the firefight lasted for about four hours and five minutes, with the NPA rebels withdrawing toward the northwest direction.
The report also said that the NPA was led by Joedario Nablo alias Didet, Eldefonso Nablo alias Bobong and Eddie Abina, who all belonged to the communist rebel division in Calbiga town. DEMPSEY REYES
