A magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit the Philippines on Monday, leaving eight people dead, damaging infrastructure and causing power outage mostly in Luzon, authorities said.
In a live interview on radio dzMM, Pampanga Gov. Lilia Pineda said among the eight unidentified fatalities were a grandparent and a child and three others from a building that collapsed in Porac.
The epicenter of the earthquake that struck at 5:11 p.m. was 18 kilometers northeast of Castillejos in Zambales, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 21 kilometers, Phivolcs said.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said it was a strong earthquake but not a major one, which is classified at Magnitude 7.
Intensity 5 was felt in San Felipe, Zambales; Malolos and Obando, Bulacan; Quezon City; Lipa, Batangas; Manila City; Abucay, Bataan; Valenzuela City; Magalang, Pampanga.
Intensity 4 was recorded in Pasig City; Makati City; Caloocan City; Meycauayan and San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan; Floridablanca, Pampanga; Villasis, Pangasinan; Tagaytay City; Villasis, Pangasinan; Baguio City; Marikina City; Las Pinas City.
Intensity 3 was felt in Dasmarinas, Indang and Gen. Trias, Cavite; Lucban, Quezon; Muntinlupa City, Cabanatuan City; Palayan City; Gapan City; Santo Domingo and Talavera, Nueva Ecija.
Intensity 2 was recorded in Baler, Aurora.
Marlou Salazar, director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in Central Luzon, said his office in San Fernando, Pampanga experienced power outage.
Salazar also said that the there were people who experienced dizziness following the quake.
“They were already brought to a hospital. We are also checking other places where there may be power outage.”
As of posting time, Salazar told reporters that the OCD in Central Luzon was contacting the disaster management office of Zambales and other provinces, which were affected by the quake.
People were also evacuated from SM Pampanga, Salazar said.
The quake has had no effect on the Angat Dam in Bulacan.
Vice Governor Daniel Fernando said thru his social media account that everyone must be prepared and alert.
