WITH less than a month before the midterm elections, Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada continues to lead his opponents by a wide margin and will likely win his third and last term, a non-commissioned survey in April said.
The Media Trend Setter (MDT) showed that if the elections for mayor of Manila were to be held today, Estrada would be the clear winner as he would get 46.3 percent of the votes against his closest rival, former Manila vice mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, 31 percent with former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim in third at 9.6 percent.
The same survey from April 12-15 showed that 13.1 percent of the 1,800 respondents were undecided.
MTS Executive Director Rolando Luna said Estrada was ahead in all the five districts of Manila, getting a high 56.8 percent in District 3 and 48.2 percent in District 4.
Upbeat about the results of the survey, Estrada said it would be possible to move ahead with his programs that would help thousands of poor Manilenos, including senior citizens and poor but deserving students.
Estrada’s running mate, former representative Amado Bagatsing, is also leading in the survey with 47 percent, while closest rival and incumbent Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna has 33 percent. Former police officer Elmer Jamias got 8 percent with 12 percent undecided.
In the March survey by the Probe Data Processing and Research Services (PDPRS), Estrada and Bagatsing were also ahead with 45.9 and 49.6 percent of the votes going their way.
Moreno got 34 percent while Lim got 17.8 percent. Independent mayoralty candidate Francis Villegas received 1 percent, while Lito Atienza, who is not running for mayor received 1 percent.
The PDPRS, an independent data and research firm that conducts poll surveys for local candidates in Metro Manila, is under the Metro Pacific company owned by businessman Manny Pangilinan.
In the December 2018 and January 2019 Probe surveys, more than 1,800 Manila respondents were asked on who they wanted to be their mayor for the next three years.
In the first survey, Estrada scored 43 percent compared to Moreno’s 21 percent while Lim got 16 percent.
For vice mayor, Bagatsing topped the survey with 49.6 percent. His rival, Honey Lacuna, received 46 percent. Other vice mayoral bets Elmer Jamias and Manoy Verlie Anonuevo got one percent each. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
