MANILA, Philippnes — Motorists should take alternate routes as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will repair parts of Edsa, C5 Road and Katipunan Avenue from the evening of Holy Wednesday, April 17, until Monday morning, April 22.

The Tripa de Gallina Bridge in Pasay City will also be closed from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday to speed up its rehabilitation.

According to the DPWH, the affected sections are Edsa’s outer lane (both southbound and northbound) from New York Street to Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City.

Also set to undergo repairs  are the middle lane of C5 Road (northbound) in front of SM Aura, and the F.B. dela Rosa stretch of the truck lane of Katipunan Avenue (southbound).

The DPWH said these road sections would be closed starting at 11 p.m. on Holy Wednesday until 5 a.m. on Monday, April 22.

4-day closure for bridge

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) general manager Jojo Garcia said that the northbound and southbound lanes of the Tripa de Gallina Bridge would be closed to take advantage of the light traffic during Holy Week.

“Its private contractors required the bridge’s full closure for some concrete-pouring work,” Garcia added. The closure will be from Wednesday midnight until noon of Easter Sunday.

The 50-year-old structure, tagged by the DPWH as one of the Metro’s weakest bridges, has been undergoing a P25-million reconstruction since August last year.

With an average daily volume of 5,000 vehicles, the bridge is one of six that have been closed down for repairs or demolition by the MMDA.

Affected motorists were advised to take Emilia Street to go to Taft Avenue. A counterflow lane would be opened on a portion of Gil Puyat Avenue to accommodate buses and cargo trucks. —With a report from Krixia Subingsubing
