Limited water supply looms in Metro this Holy Week

CONSUMERS in parts of Metro Manila and Cavite will experience little to no water supply this Holy Week as Maynilad Water Services, Inc. begins maintenance works this week.
“The duration of service interruptions will differ per area. Some will have no water for five hours only, while others will have no water for 30 hours,” Maynilad Water Supply Operations Head Ronaldo Padua said in a statement last week.
Affected are portions of Manila, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City, Parañaque, Pasay, Las Piñas, and Bacoor in Cavite.
Maynilad started conducting several water network enhancement activities on April 16 (Holy Tuesday) and would end on April 20 (Black Saturday).
Activities include facility maintenance works, pipe decommissioning, pipe interconnections, and valve replacements.
The Ayala-led utility will also conduct smaller, parallel activities such as leak detection and leak repairs, which would otherwise require the implementation of separate service disruptions.
“The activities will be done during the Holy Week, when fewer customers are expected to be home, thus lessening the impact of service interruptions on water consumers,” the firm said.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. These activities are being done so we can continue to improve the water infrastructure and ensure better water services for the long-term,” Padua said.
Maynilad advises affected customers to store enough water at least three days before the scheduled interruption “to prevent simultaneous heavy withdrawals of water from its pipelines, which can reduce water pressure and cause some customers to have no water earlier than schedule.”It is also urging its customers to store water in containers that have covers.
“Water stored in open containers should be used within one or two days. Boil the water if intended for drinking or cooking,” said Maynilad.
The company also asked its customers to store water in multiple large and small containers, noting that drinking water should be stored in clean and disinfected containers that can be firmly closed.
Maynilad said water stored in plastic containers should be kept away from gasoline, kerosene, pesticides or similar substances because vapors from these products could penetrate plastic.
It also advised customers not to store water in containers that were previously used to store toxic substances.
The company will 40 water tankers to deliver water to areas that will have limited access to water supply during the period.
Maynilad, majority owned by Manuel Pangilinan-led Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), services the cities of Manila, Pasay, Parañaque, Caloocan, Muntinlupa, Las Piñas, Valenzuela and parts of Makati and Quezon City, as well as portions of Cavite. ANNA LEAH E. GONZALES
