PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief General Oscar Albayalde on Wednesday assured the public that there were no threats to peace and security during the Holy Week but said the PNP was not putting its defense down as it raised a full alert in Metro Manila.

“So far, we haven’t received any kind of threat whatsoever. Of course, even if there is no threat, we have to be always on alert and our intelligence monitoring is in place,” Albayalde said in Filipino.

The PNP deployed more than 91,000 police officers nationwide, especially in tourist destinations and areas of convergence like churches, and K9 units and bomb-sniffing dogs in bus terminals.

A full alert status means that all police personnel must report for duty as their leaves are canceled until the end of the Holy Week.

Albayalde and Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) regional director, went to bus terminals in Cubao and Pasay and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to inspect the security of passengers travelling to provinces.

Based on inspection at the Araneta Cubao Bus Terminal, Albayalde commended passengers for not bringing dangerous and banned items.

He said the public “finally learned” on what they should do when going to  terminals during the Holy Week.

“So far, there are no contrabands caught from passengers here. I think they are already educated, that’s why,” Albayalde said.

Aside from the PNP, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, and the Bureau of Fire Protection are also on full alert for the Holy Week. ROY NARRA
