IN anticipation of the heavy flow of traffic during the Holy Week, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reactivated its ‘Lakbay Alalay’ program.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar on Tuesday said that he ordered the reactivation of the department’s “Lakbay Alalay” program to help travelers going home to the provinces to visit churches, pilgrimages and taking advantage of the long weekend to spend time with families and loved ones.
“We will deploy motorist assistance teams (MATs) along strategic locations nationwide,” Villar said.
The DPWH’s motorist assistance program will be operational nationwide starting from 12 noon on Holy Wednesday until 12 noon on Monday, April 22.
Uniformed MATs with maintenance equipment will be on standby at navy blue-colored Lakbay Alalay tents on a round-the-clock shift to provide emergency assistance and ensure major thoroughfares are well-maintained, and free from obstructions and potholes.
“The public may seek help from the said DPWH field personnel if they are in trouble,” Villar said.
He said that the MATs would likewise make sure that appropriate warning, directional, and information signages were legibly and visibly installed, especially along critical sections.
The assistance teams are likewise directed to coordinate with the Land Transportation Office, Philippine National Police, Local Government Units and other government agencies for any assistance that may be required.
Villar also ordered the scheduling of ongoing road works in various regions and to install the necessary traffic advisory and directional, informative and warning signs, and to remove obstructions along national highways that may delay or impede the flow of traffic in coordination with concerned LGUs.
