MALACANANG has assured the public that the government was on top of the power situation in Luzon where several plants in the region either shut down or were performing below their capacity over the past weeks.

Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo gave the assurance even as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Monday placed the Luzon grid under red and yellow alerts for the fourth time this month.

Speaking to reporters, Panelo said Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi told him that the Department of Energy (DoE) remained on top of the situation.

“We’re just talking to Secretary Al, sabi niya (he said), ‘We’re on top of it,’” Panelo said during a press conference.

In its advisory, the NGCP on Monday said the grid was placed on red alert — the highest warning — from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A red alert means there is insufficient power supply and authorities may implement rotational brownouts in some areas.

A yellow alert was raised from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. This means power reserves have dropped below the minimum 647 megawatts, but does not necessarily mean there will be power outages.

NGCP said the alerts were raised because of insufficient operating reserves caused by forced outage of multiple power plants. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
