1,400 new measles cases recorded as DoH keeps outbreak status in parts of PH

MORE than 1,400 new measles cases were validated over the past two weeks, the Department of Health (DoH) said, as it kept the outbreak status in some regions.
Latest data from the epidemiology bureau showed that there was a total of 1,406 measles cases recorded from March 31 to April 5, 2019.
Health Undersecretary Rolando Domingo previously said that there must be no new cases for about six consecutive weeks in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Central and Western Visayas before the DoH could say that the epidemic was under control.
The latest figure brings the total number of measles cases to 28,362 cases with 389 deaths since January 1. This is higher than the 6,053 with 53 deaths reported in the same period in 2018.
Metro Manila has the highest number with 5,749 cases with 104 deaths. Calabarzon recorded the most number of deaths at 107 out of 5,450 cases.
Ilocos Region had 1,225 cases, including 12 deaths;
Cagayan Valley with 415 cases, including two deaths;
Central Luzon with 4,633 cases, including 64 deaths;
Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan with 1,197 cases, including 10 deaths;
Bicol Region with 838 cases, including seven deaths;
Western Visayas with 1,696 cases, including seven deaths; Central Visayas with 1,395 cases, including 10 deaths;
Eastern Visayas with 1,133 cases, including 25 deaths; Zamboanga Peninsula with 343 cases, including one death; Northern Mindanao with 1,396 cases, including 10 deaths; Davao Region with 625 cases, including 11 deaths;
Soccsargen with 565, including four deaths;
Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao with 500 cases, including six deaths;
Cordillera Administrative Region with 456 cases, including one death;
Caraga with 737 cases, including eight deaths.
The most affected age group is from one to four years old.
The DoH has immunized 3.8 million children aged six to 59 months after the department intensified its efforts to contain the outbreak in five regions. CATHERINE A, MODESTO
