Duterte to ask daughter to ‘lay off’ presidency, says she just wants to ‘shake tree’

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will discourage his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, to run for President in the next elections, if he would have his way.

In his speech during a campaign rally in Bacolod City on Thursday, Duterte dispelled persistent talks that his daughter was being groomed as his successor, saying she simply wanted to “shake the tree.”

“Alam mo yung anak ko baka ma ano kayo, I will advise her to lay off. Pero if I know Inday hindi yan tatakbo ng Presidente (You know my daughter, I will advise her to lay off but I know Inday won’t run for president),” the President said.

“Wise masyado ‘yan si Inday (Inday is very wise). She just wants to shake the tree para maglabasan, mahulog yung mag hinog, yung hilaw maiwan (so the ripe ones fall and the raw ones stay). Shaking the tree and getting rid of the dried leaves and everything. Kung ako tatanungin niyo hindi ako papayag na tatakbo (If you ask me, I will not allow her to run),” he added.

The President, almost halfway in his six-year term, admitted that getting low pay, insults, and criticisms were among the difficulties facing the country’s leader.

“Alam mo sa totoo lang, I apologize for saying this. It does not pay well sa pagod mo, and the things that you have done, and the things that you have to endure because you are there,” Duterte said.

“Anong klaseng insulto, anong mga paninira. Alam mo namang hindi totoo,” he said.
