Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio

EXPECT the candidates of the administration backed-regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) to still actively campaign in the 2019 midterm elections despite their dominance in a recent pre-election survey, its chairman Sara Duterte-Carpio said.

In a statement, Duterte-Carpio vowed not to be complacent until after the winners of the 2019 midterm elections were proclaimed.

“HNP officers and volunteers are humbled that all the sleepless nights, tiring long travels, arguments, fatigue, and obsessive brainstorming have resulted in something positive,” the Davao City mayor said in a statement.

“But we cannot be happy until after the winners are proclaimed, so we shall continue to soar and fight until we succeed,” she added.

Duterte-Carpio made the statement after 10 of HNP bets were included in the list of candidates who have a “statistical chance” in the May 13 elections, according to a Pulse Asia survey released on Thursday.

She said that the “good performance” of the HNP bets in the surveys was “strong indication that the candidates are effective in delivering the message of ‘positive change.’”

The regional party leader apparently took another swipe on opposition candidates’ supposed “negative campaigning.”

“We are pushing a different kind of campaigning, something that does not involve maligning or attacking other candidates, and we think the voters agree with us,” Duterte-Carpio said.

“The agenda of each of our candidates obviously resonate well with the voters. Our candidates truly value what the voters consider important to their lives and to the country,” she added.

The HNP-backed candidates included in the list of probable winners in the upcoming polls were reelectionist Senators Cynthia Villar (second), and Juan Edgard “Sonny” Angara (third to fourth), former presidential aide Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go (third to fifth), Rep. Pilar Juliana “Pia” Cayetano (fourth to sixth), former Philipine National Police chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa (sixth to ninth), former senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla (seventh to 10th), Ilocos Gov. Maria Josefa Imelda “Imee” Marcos (ninth to 12th), former presidential political adviser Francis Tolentino (10th to 16th), former senator Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada (10th to 16th), and Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel 3rd (11th to 16th).

Aside from the 10 HNP bets, the regional party is also endorsing the candidacies of former journalist Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad, Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, and Maguindanao Rep. Zajid “Dong” Mangudadatu. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
