A soldier was killed in a misencounter between militiamen and troops at San Francisco, Quezon, the military said on Thursday.
Capt. Patrick Retumban, spokesman of the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, said a squad of soldiers from the 85th Infantry Battalion was conducting community support program when it encountered a team from the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) under the 59th Infantry Battalion.
While the two groups were conducting separate patrols in Sitio Matingan-tingan at Barangay Casay in San Francisco, Retumban said they managed to sense each other’s presence but was unaware as to which side they were on.
“There was one who shouted, but it’s too late since there was someone shot already,” he told reporters.
The slain soldier was identified as Private First Class Arvin Peñaredonda, who was hit on the pelvis.
Peñaredonda was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
Retumban said an investigation was underway, but one angle he saw was the lack of coordination between forces monitoring the area. DEMPSEY REYES
